“Success is the progressive realization of a worthwhile, predetermined, personal goal”
Paul J. Meyer

Whilst we know that some people clearly lack ambition, most do in fact have dreams and ideas around what they want or wish for. These include, of course, the ideal job, partner, possessions, and lifestyle to boot.  The difference is that many people fail to act on their dreams due to inertia, lack of planning, or confusion on the right course of action.

Success and a great future should never be left to chance. It is important to be clear on what you want out of life and to do all that you can to work towards that dream. Here are some important success factors that I hope will prove helpful to you:

  1. “Know Thy Self”–The famous words of Socrates (470BC – 399BC) ring just as true today as they did when they were spoken over 2,000 years ago. Know what you are all about, what you’re interested in, what you’re passionate about, what your values are, what your talents, strengths and weaknesses are. Essentially it is important to be clear on what you believe your core purpose in life is. This is a good basis from which to determine your value proposition. Your value proposition is what will enable and determine the value you can add and as a result the difference you can make whether in your home, at work or in your community.

  2. Dream Big – It is important to see beyond your present situation and circumstances; have a clear vision for your life. Be optimistic and generate clear pictures of an exciting, accomplished, and prosperous future.

  3. Set Goals – Be clear on what you want out of life and set clear written goals to work towards. These goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound (SMART).

  4. Be Diligent – Commit to your dreams and goals daily through hard work. Try getting up at 5am to get an early start to the day. Contrary to common thought, this will give you more energy to face the day. Diligence is essential to your performance, growth, and ultimate success.

  5. Continue Learning – Be sure to invest in yourself through continued learning so that you grow in knowledge and stay relevant and ready for more responsibility.

  6. Protect your Reputation – No matter how much success and wealth you accumulate your greatest asset is your good name. The best way to protect your name is to have a clear set of values and to conduct yourself consistently with integrity.

  7. Keep Good Company – As social beings we have a fundamental need to connect with other people. Ensure that you purposefully develop and maintain positive friendships and relationships to lead a healthy and balanced life. Do not rely on accidental friendships but rather deliberately seek out people of good character to be close to.

  8. Be Thankful – Show gratitude for what you have and what you achieve. By being grateful, you remain open and ready to receive more. You will often find that people who are ungrateful lack and can never have enough for their wants and needs. Being appreciative and thankful begins and ends with three simple words: ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.

“If it is to be, it is up to me.”
Robert Schuller
