Why Africa and the World needs to Re-Discover the Philosophy of Ubuntu!

30 July 2013 - 10:56am -- charles

“We believe that in the long run the special contribution to the world by Africa will be in the field of human relationship. The great powers of the world may have done wonders in giving the world an industrial and military look, but the great gift is still to come from Africa – giving the world a more human face”.

Steve Biko, political activist and author, 1970

To Wonder Aloud!

28 July 2013 - 11:46pm -- charles

‘To Wonder Aloud’

Some days it rains fire in my mind

And the earth appears scorched

Some days it rains the water of heaven

And all creation springs to life

Some days are stormy and some are still

My thoughts come fast and furious,

Like traffic cruising the freeway

Halting, bumper-to-bumper, in rush hour

They are many and congest my mind

With pen in hand I release them and free my soul

Desert of Hope

28 July 2013 - 2:30pm -- charles

"Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord." Psalm 31:24

Like Moses, I find myself herding sheep in the wilderness.  In this desert, my dreams of deliverance hung out to dry

Like Elijah, after running scared a full day, now tired I find myself weak and hungry sitting in the still of the desert night

Like Jonah, my command long forgotten, I have been tossed by the storms of the seas and find myself a-perch in the loins of a great whale, faced with the stench of death

The Reign of Love

27 July 2013 - 9:53am -- charles

Love is like the summer rain

It is gentle and refreshing

The sound of rain falling

The sweet pouring of hope

The smell of earth filling the air

When the Heart Cries Out!

26 July 2013 - 11:45pm -- charles

"Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life." Proverbs 4:23

When the heart cries out:

The hidden and apparently weak

Spring up and to the fore

The chains that bind no longer hold

And iron grips melt away

When the heart cries out:

Like the pupa hatched from an egg

The spirit emerges

6 Benefits and Rewards of Successful Management!

24 July 2013 - 10:46am -- charles

As leaders and managers in organizations, we choose the activities, strategies, and tactics the team employs to achieve set priorities and objectives. To do this we have a multitude of resources available to us including the energy and excitement of our departments and the organization, creativity and ideas, time, and the financial resources available for day-to-day requirements and special projects. In the many years of my management and leadership experience I have found that there are several benefits and rewards of successful management and these include the following:

The Importance of Values & Ethics in Business Leadership

22 July 2013 - 8:34am -- charles

All relationships, interactions, and activities in life, whether between private persons, corporate entities, or both, must be guided by some principles and standards. These principles and standards will be founded on a key set of values that guide the decisions of the parties involved.

Managers and executives hold the primary responsibility in setting and maintaining standards within organizations and here are some key areas where this applies and becomes relevant:

Ten Important Questions to Ponder!

20 July 2013 - 12:29am -- charles

Today’s fast-paced and demanding world often makes it difficult to have time to stop and reflect. Time will not come and make itself available, though, so we need to make time to think through important issues of life.

When that time arrives, don’t waste it. Here are some simple but effective questions to consider:

Keys to Becoming a Successful Manager

19 July 2013 - 8:53am -- charles

The responsibilities and expectations of managers are significant. Many, including the organization’s shareholders, employees, customers, and the authorities, look to the manager to make things happen and to ensure that they happen correctly. Managers therefore have to apply a great degree of skill and right principles in successfully executing their assignments. Here are some tips that I have found useful in my management and leadership experience:

Key Qualities of a Leader

18 July 2013 - 10:34am -- charles

Throughout the ages we have seen men and women of differing characters and personality come into leadership in different spheres of life, including monarchies, governments, corporations and social movements. Some prominent figures that come to mind are Mother Teresa, Rosa Parks, Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr., Kwame Nkuruma, Steve Jobs, Nelson Mandela, and Julius Nyerere.

No doubt we could compile a long list when searching the qualities that make a great leader. That said, of all the characteristics I am sure that we can all reduce our list to the few we consider essential. For me, the essential ones for any leader are:

How You Can Make a Difference in the World

17 July 2013 - 10:03am -- charles

When I was growing up I often felt sadness at the problems plaguing society, and I wondered what the reasons were for people suffering poverty, illnesses and other afflictions. I would then begin thinking about how these circumstances could be changed; I would think of ideas to help the poor or bring about the elusive world peace, but then I would think, “Who am I to think I can change the world?”

As I grew and developed courage I realized that actually I could make a real difference – at home, at school, and later at work and in the whole community by leading through my ideas, hard work, volunteering, and charitable giving.

Here are some guidelines of how you can make a difference in the world, whether it is at your place of work, the community, or at home:

Reflections: Wondering the Sea of Life

3 July 2013 - 5:22pm -- gisella

I am sitting staring out at the sea. As I watch, it waxes and wanes, to and fro

I wonder how far beyond the distance of my sight the water stretches, where it begins and where it ends

I wonder how deep the depth of its belly really is.  Waxing and waning its belly churns, at times bringing fear, at times peace

I wonder how wide its arms are that its breadth should embrace all the earth.  As it surges forward it brings countless granules of sand    ashore and on withdrawing it returns taking just as many away

As I ponder upon the sea I am left wondering of life itself

How far beyond the distance of my eye’s reach it stretches
